Introduction

Background

As the global focus on climate change intensifies, the importance of mastering carbon accounting and credits calculation in nature-based solutions (NbS) projects has never been more paramount. Recent controversies surrounding carbon projects underline the urgent need for a more robust, transparent, and accurate accounting system. This training course, now in its 5th iteration, has a track record of success with earlier sessions held in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the course is resuming with enriched and updated content. The curriculum is designed to offer in-depth insights into carbon accounting methodologies across diverse sectors, placing special emphasis on NbS like REDD+, afforestation, reforestation, agroforestry, and biochar. Through this course, participants will gain the tools they need to contribute to a more transparent and accountable carbon market.

Aim and Scope

The aim of this three-day course is to equip participants with the theoretical and practical knowledge required to calculate and account for carbon credits. The scope includes:

• Reviews of the Warsaw Framework and carbon standards

• Introduction to Carbon Accounting Principles

• Carbon accounting in forestry with focus on REDD+

• Carbon accounting in agroforestry as part of regenerative farming

• Carbon accounting for biochar produced from agriwastes

• Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV)

• Business ideas for commercializing nature-based solutions in carbon capture

Day 1: Introduction & REDD+

Morning Session (4 hours)

• Review of NbS for Carbon Capture 

• Review of the Warsaw Frameworks for REDD+ and Carbon Standards 

• Carbon Accounting Principles

• Introduction to REDD+

Afternoon Session (4 hours)

• REDD+ Accounting: Baseline Calculation

• REDD+ Accounting: Forest Reference Emission Levels (FREL)

• REDD+ Accounting: Removals and Reductions

• REDD+ Accounting: Project Effectiveness

• REDD+ Accounting: Verified Carbon Units (VCUs)

• Discussion and Q&A

Day 2: Afforestation, Reforestation & Agroforestry

Morning Session (4 hours)

• Afforestation and Reforestation Accounting: Project case studies and calculations

• Agroforestry Basics and Accounting: Overview and carbon accounting methodologies

Afternoon Session (4 hours)

• Carbon Accounting in Agroforestry as Part of Regenerative Farming

• Case Studies and Hands-on Calculations: Practice session on carbon calculations in afforestation, reforestation, and agroforestry

Day 3: Biochar & MRV and Business Ideas

Morning Session (4 hours)

• Agriwastes and Biochar

• Carbon accounting for and carbon credits from biochar

• Discussion and Q&A on Biochar

Afternoon Session (4 hours)

• Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) for NbS: Best practices and methodologies

• Business Ideas for NbS in Carbon Capture: How to commercialize and scale NbS for carbon capture

Fees

The total fee for this three-day intensive training course is US$1000 (Max. 20 Participants). This includes:

Optional 2-Night 3-Day Field Trip

An optional 2-night 3-day field trip is available at an additional cost of US$1000. This includes:

• Transportation

• Accommodation

• Meals

• Resource persons

• Field exercises: Tree measurements, carbon calculation, quick identifications of drivers and solutions for addressing the drivers, and business opportunities.

• Day 1: Tree measurement by human and drone and hand-on carbon calculation. Stay near beach.

• Day 2: Nature-based solutions learning and experiencing the kayaking in the wetland botanical garden. Stay near beach. 

• Day 3: Visit to a national park and discussions with soil doctors (farmers). Return to Bangkok
